  • Loathes: I loathe nothing but I have compassion for the difficult journey in life. Everyone is at a different level in their path, and it's easy to become a hypocrite if you are not willing to self evaluate over time. One must learn first to forgive ourselves enough to forgive others...for=give....'to give'... I understand how issues in  life are a struggle to come to terms with the problems we face daily.  Balance, there is always a give and a take...

  • Years Surfing: Since 1994, actually got my first board when I was 8 years old, but had a lull there for about 29 years...

  • Years Riding Watercraft: Since 1979, 20 years now...

California Department of Boating and Waterways nominee and presentation as follows:

Shawn Alladio

The organization K38 Water Safety is very active across the United States to promote aquatic and boating safety in recreation, enforcement and competition.

Shawn Alladio, the organization's founder, maintains a grueling schedule to teach advanced personal watercraft skills to marine enforcement personnel, search and rescue professionals, and special details of the armed forces (Navy, Marines   and Coast Guard).

K38 is also called upon to provide safety and rescue services while monitoring competitive events such as organized personal watercraft races (IJSBA and off-shore), surfing competitions, and the California Police Games-PWC competition.

While Shawn's work load with K38 is demanding, she still finds time to work at a community level.  Her love for the water and the future of boating draws her to youth.  She can often be found visiting local schools to share basic water safety with the students or addressing PWC clubs to promote safe operation and courtesy on the water.

Frequently K38 attends conferences, safety fairs and boat shows to distribute boating safety literature and answer aquatic and boating safety questions from the public.  These activities are done on a voluntary basis.

California is blessed to claim Shawn as a resident.  She is a friend to the Department of Boating and Waterways and is registered as a volunteer with the Department.  Her volunteer work for the Department has included assignments such as making presentations on behalf of the Safety and Education Units, serving as a consultant on PWC safety issues, and providing free PWC workshops for staff and Department hosted conferences (like National Association State Boating Law Administrators  and Western States Boating Administrators Association).

Research is a top priority for Shawn and K38 to maintain the most accurate and current information regarding boating, PWC, aquatic safety and search and rescue.  Shawn travels to locations to explore new aquatic programs or controversial safety issues.  She also keeps abreast of the latest and best safety and rescue equipment.  (Our Department has used her as a consultant on several PWC equipment and procedure issues).

While aquatic and boating safety is her livelihood, it is also a passion at a personal level.  Shawn has gone from a boating accident victim to a herald for water and boating safety.  By founding K38 Water Safety and developing excellent training courses, she has become recognized Nationally and Internationally as an aquatic safety expert.

I respectfully nominate Shawn Alladio for the Nation Award from the National Water Safety Congress based on her numerous contributions to water and boating safety.
